What Intervention Techniques Are Good for Troubled Teens?

If you are the parent of a troubled teen, you may be feeling overwhelmed and helpless. Unfortunately, millions of other parents are in the same boat. The good news is that intervention techniques can help troubled teens.

What is Intervention?

An intervention occurs when family, friends, and professionals speak with troubled individuals about their issues to get them to enter treatment. Usually, it is a carefully-planned process that takes days or weeks of preparation. The goal is to get the person to see that they need help and convince them to accept that help.

When Is it Time for Intervention?

As a parent, it is vital to recognize the signs that your teen may be troubled. Some common symptoms include:
  • Withdrawing from friends and activities
  • Poor grades or skipping school
  • Increased anger or violence
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Self-harm
If you notice any of these at-risk behaviors in your teen, the situation is probably out of your hands. However, if this is the case, it is no fault of your own. That is why professional resources are there.

Types of Intervention Techniques

There are many different intervention techniques that you can use to help troubled teens. Some effective methods include:

Mental Health Treatment Programs

More than 1 in 3 high school students suffer from a mental health disorder. Frequently, troubled teens are dealing with undiagnosed mental health problems. If this is the case, enrolling your teen in a mental health treatment program can be very helpful. Our mental health treatment program helps troubled teens struggling with mental health issues. It begins with a holistic approach that includes a comprehensive assessment and individualized treatment plan. The program includes weekly individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, medication management, and educational support. Our team of licensed therapists, psychiatrists, doctors, and counselors are here to help your troubled teen get back on track.

Residential Treatment Centers

Another option for troubled teens is a residential treatment program. Residential treatment centers are live-in mental health facilities that provide 24-hour care. They offer various services, including individual therapy, group therapy, medication management, and educational support. In residential treatment, teens are offered 24-hour support from a team of behavioral and mental health professionals. Around-the-clock care allows them to receive the intensive treatment they need to progress their recovery. They will also have access to academics, several kinds of therapy, life skills training, and recreation. Benefits of residential treatment programs include:
  • Increased structure and supervision: Teenagers need structure and management to stay on track. In residential treatment, they will have a set schedule that includes time for therapy, academics, recreation, and other activities.
  • A safe and supportive environment: Residential treatment centers provide a safe and supportive environment for troubled teens. We designed our programs to help teens feel comfortable while working on their recovery.
  • Access to comprehensive mental health services: Residential treatment provides intensive care that can help troubled teens improve their mental health. A team of specialists is critical if your teen requires dual-diagnosis treatment, such as drug addiction and a co-occurring mental health disorder.
Whether a teen suffers from a severe disorder like schizophrenia or is dealing with more common behavioral issues like anger management, residential treatment can be very impactful. Residential treatment aims to help troubled teens develop the skills to function independently in society.

Therapeutic Programs

If your troubled teen has trouble in school or faces expulsion, a therapeutic program may be a good option. Therapeutic programs help troubled teens who have struggled in traditional school settings. They offer various mental health and behavioral treatments, including individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and educational support. At our therapeutic program, your teen will have:
  • Immersive best-practice therapy: Licensed therapists, psychiatrists, and counselors provide troubled teens with evidence-based treatment that a team of professionals tailors to their individual needs.
  • A safe and structured environment: Our program provides a safe and structured environment for troubled teens to heal and grow. To help troubled teens get back on track, they need a high amount of structure that develops new, positive behaviors.
  • Individualized attention: We offer a low student-to-staff ratio so that each teen can receive the individualized attention they need.
  • A focus on academics: We offer a variety of academic programs with state-licensed teachers so that troubled teens can catch up and get back on track. Teens will also have access to tutors to receive extra help outside of class.

What Can I Do at Home?

If you're struggling to deal with your troubled teen on your own, you can do a few things at home to help them get back on track. Here are a few tips:

Create Structure

Troubled teens need structure to stay on track. To create a daily schedule for your teen that includes time for school, homework, chores, and other activities. Additionally, make sure to set clear expectations and rules for your teen.

Encourage Positive Behaviors

Try to catch your teen doing something good and praise them for it. If you affirm their good behavior, they will likely continue to behave that way. Conversely, try to avoid overreacting to your teen every time they make a mistake.

Focus on Communication

Open communication is vital when dealing with a troubled teen. Try to have regular conversations with your teen about their day-to-day life and how they're feeling. Effective communication will help you stay connected and be there for them when they need you.

Enforce Consequences

If your teen breaks a rule, it's essential to enforce consequences. Discipline will help them understand that there are consequences for their actions. First, however, make sure the consequences are appropriate and consistent.
